Rumor: Joey Melo released

TFC domestic developmental player Joey Melo was released by TFC last month. Although the team has yet to make it official, a source close to the player confirmed that the Milton, Ont. native will not be back with the team next year.

Melo was with Toronto for two seasons. He did not feature for the Reds in 2008 after making five appearances, all as a sub, in 2007.

His release frees up one developmental spot for 2009.

It’s likely the best move for Melo at this point in his career. It should allow him to pursue opportunities that will allow him to play more consistently. There is some suggestion that Melo could end up in the CSL. The Italia Shooters, who have recently taken on a new investor, could be a fit.

The CSL has graduated some players to fully professional leagues overseas recently.
