TFC Academy’s Senior Team beat Italian giants AC Milan 3-0 in the Dallas Cup Super Group on Monday. The Reds remain unbeaten after two group games at the tournament having opened with a 1-1 tie against Tigres of Mexico on Sunday with a late equalizer from Andre Verdugo. TFC Academy’s final match of the group stage is on Wednesday against Manchester City.

Verdugo scored his second goal of the tournament in the win over AC Milan. Full back Casey D’Mello and Gambian Amadou Sanyang scored the other goals. “The boys played much better against AC Milan than against Tigres,” said TFC Academy Head Coach Stuart Neely. “There is certainly a belief from the players in the camp that they are as good as we think they are. AC Milan has all of the history but we’ve just created history for ourselves by beating them 3-0.”

“It’s an unbelievable task completed for the boys. We can’t ask for anything more from them. The quality of the opposition is strong but our team is dealing with it very well. We are one of a number of good sides in the tournament. The boys have certainly not been overawed by what they have come up against,” he said.

Toronto FC will be represented at a prestigious youth tournament in the United States in early April. TFC Academy’s Senior Team will go up against clubs from around the world in the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup U19 Super Group in Frisco, Texas from April 5th to 12th.

Other teams competing in the tournament include Manchester City of the English Premier League, Argentina’s River Plate, Brazilian giants Sao Paulo and Eintracht Frankfurt from Germany.

TFC Academy earned an invite to the Dallas Cup after reaching the semi-finals of the SUM U17 Cup (MLS Youth Cup) in Colorado last summer. The Reds youngsters won all three group games in Denver last July before losing to Real Salt Lake in the final four.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity,” said Jason Bent, coach of the Senior Academy Team. “We will be up against long established Academy teams from around the world, but we have made great progress in our short existence and this is another big step.”

“We are going to go there and compete to the best of our ability,” said Bent. “For our boys it will be a great experience going up against top kids from around the world. We’re putting in hard work on the training pitch with four training sessions a week so we are going to prepare the players as best as possible.”

The Dallas Cup is one of world soccer’s most recognized youth tournaments and is celebrating its 30th year. There are competitions for various age groups with the Super Group being the tournament’s marquee competition. The Super Group has previously featured some of the world’s top stars such as David Beckham, Raul and Wayne Rooney. Previous champions include Real Madrid, Sao Paulo, Pumas and Liverpool.
