Toronto FC announced Friday that defender Nana Attakora-Gyan, and defender/midfielder Gabe Gala have been named to the 18 man training camp roster by Canadian head coach Tony Fonseca.

The camp runs between January 25 to February 4 and will be held in Florida. This will be the final camp before the squad will gather again in March for the 2009 CONCACAF Men’s U-20 Championship. The tournament runs March 6-15 in Trinidad & Tobago. Canada has been drawn into a group with Mexico, Costa Rica and the hosts T & T. The four Group B teams will play a round-robin series at Marvin Lee Stadium in Macoya, T & T beginning on March 6. The top two teams will advance to the semi-final’s and also qualify for the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt that runs from September 25 – October 16.

Both Attakora-Gyan and Gala were members of the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup team that was held in Toronto at BMO Field. Both players were also involved in three friendly matches in various locations in 2008 that saw Canada face opponents such as Argentina, the Swiss Confederation, and the United States. Rumor: Joey Melo released

TFC domestic developmental player Joey Melo was released by TFC last month. Although the team has yet to make it official, a source close to the player confirmed that the Milton, Ont. native will not be back with the team next year.

Melo was with Toronto for two seasons. He did not feature for the Reds in 2008 after making five appearances, all as a sub, in 2007.

His release frees up one developmental spot for 2009.

It’s likely the best move for Melo at this point in his career. It should allow him to pursue opportunities that will allow him to play more consistently. There is some suggestion that Melo could end up in the CSL. The Italia Shooters, who have recently taken on a new investor, could be a fit.

The CSL has graduated some players to fully professional leagues overseas recently.
