Wynne ready to defend unbeaten start

Toronto FC defender Marvell Wynne believes the unbeaten start to the season is a good base to build on as the team prepares for Saturday’s home opener against Seattle Sounders FC (kick off 4:00 p.m. live on CBC).

The Reds started the season with a win at Kansas City Wizards and then tied 1-1 with the defending MLS champion Columbus Crew in Ohio on Saturday. “It has been a good start for us,” said Wynne. “It’s always good to get something away from home. Winning at Kansas City and then going to the defending champions and taking a point is a great start and gives us something to build on. There are always improvements to be made, but we have done well in the opening two games.”

Wynne is happy to be returning to BMO Field where Toronto FC lost just twice in the 2008 season. “I’m always excited to play at home whoever it is against,” he said. “It will be great to get out there and play in front of our fans again. It should be a good game because Seattle came out of the gates firing and are on a roll. Hopefully we will be able to stop them and keep our unbeaten start going.” The Sounders are new to MLS in 2009 and have started the season with two wins at home to New York Red Bulls and Real Salt Lake.

Wynne scored two goals last season, but has been concentrating more on the defensive parts of his game during the first two matches of the season. “Getting forward wasn’t the plan for the game in Columbus, so if I had the space I would take it but I was trying to keep defense the priority. The main goal was to make sure we were solid at the back. It takes a little bit of adjustment when the players alongside you change because you get used to how a player plays and what the strengths and weaknesses are. Overall I think everyone has done well. I know Adrian Serioux and Marco Velez pretty well so it wasn’t too much of an issue and I am confident in the overall defensive play of the team,” explained Wynne.
