Major League Soccer is already a hit.Toronto FC was announced May 11, 2006. By Aug. 25 that year there were only 3,000 deposits. It took until the start of 2007 to reach 7,000.

MLS comes to B.C. Place Stadium in 2011.

When Vancouver was awarded the 17th franchise last Wednesday, the Vancouver Whitecaps announced 5,000 season ticket deposits at $50 each would go on sale Saturday morning. Before noon Sunday, 4,500 were purchased.

Vancouverites are showing why this is Canada’s soccer city.

I think this is an unrealistic comparison.

I won’t discredit teams like Vancouver Whitecaps or Montreal Impact for their success over the years. They’re both great teams. And Toronto fans are really looking forward to the rivalry. It will do great things for soccer in Canada.

But to say that Vancouver is Canada’s soccer city, simply based on the pre-sale of season tickets is a bit of a stretch. When you have played 2 full seasons, have sold out every home game, and have a 14,000 fan waiting list for season tickets…then maybe you can attempt to make this statement.

Maybe these are comparisons you should also consider before making such statements.
