Toronto FC’s new defender Adrian Serioux trained with the team for the first time on Tuesday morning in Sunrise, Florida. The Canadian signed from FC Dallas in exchange for Toronto’s natural first round SuperDraft pick in 2010 and allocation money.

Reds coach John Carver believes Serioux will be a key signing. “It’s a great acquisition for the team,” said Carver. “At the end of last season we said we had a plan and it has really come together well. Mo Johnston has been working very hard to get players here to improve the team and he has certainly achieved that. We have worked very closely in targeting players and trying to bring them into the club.”

Serioux has played for Houston and Dallas since moving to Major League Soccer from English team Millwall in 2006. Carver knows the 29 year-old is comfortable in a number of different positions, but will use him in the middle of defence. “I am going to play him as a central defender,” said Carver. “I know he can also play as a right back or in midfield, but I have seen him play in the middle of defence for the national team and I certainly liked what I saw. He’s an experienced guy and he’s a Canadian which is important.”

Following the arrivals of Serioux, Pablo Vitti and Dwayne De Rosario, plus the addition of SuperDraft picks Sam Cronin, Stefan Frei and O’Brian White, Toronto’s squad has been significantly strengthened during the off-season, but Carver expects more additions. “We’re not finished yet there is still a bit of movement to come,” he said.
