Dobson: Boys are back in town

With Toronto FC in Florida for more than week, most of us hadn’t seen much of the team since the initial few days of camp at the beginning of the month.

A lot has happened.

The session I witnessed Tuesday as was good as anything I’ve seen with this team. You don’t have to trust me. I watched with my pal Craig Forrest and that was his opinion. I trust it. And besides, both Mo Johnston and John Carver are glowing over what they’re seeing these days. Chad Barrett has obviously agreed with the consensus that he wasn’t fit enough last year. As a result, he has a new body for 2009. And his movement on the ball in tandem with newcomer Pablo Vitti is a pleasure to watch. With Dwayne De Rosario, Rohan Ricketts and Amado Guevara darting around behind them and Carl Robinson moving the ball forward, offensively this team looks good.

Switching from offence to defence is a different story. This is where we are still waiting for something to happen. The Reds did not ship out defenders Todd Dunivant, Tyrone Marshall and Julius James without a plan. We just don’t know yet what it is and judging by the Cheshire grin on Carver’s face, it could be a big one. It may take another week or two but something is about to happen.

Meanwhile the goalkeeping battle is shaping up to be the dynamic affair we were all expecting. Nobody has given an inch. They’re all stepping up. This team will also not be afraid to keep all three if they think that’s the right move. Plenty of time before the season kicks off for the keepers to sort themselves out.

Only three days of training under the bubble this week, then it’s off to Sunrise, Florida on Friday for ten days of training with at least two exhibition matches sprinkled in. I have a feeling a lot will have happened by the time they return to Toronto at the end of the month.
