Toronto FC beat the U.S. Under 20s 2-1 in a preseason game in Bradenton, Fla. on Sunday afternoon. It was the Reds first competitive game of preseason. Chad Barrett and trialist Michael McGlinchey scored the goals.

The game was played at a fast pace against a very competitive U.S. team and was broken up into four segments of 30 minutes, 15 minutes, 15 minutes and 30 minutes. “We had a training session in the morning before the game and then the match was a fantastic test,” said Toronto coach John Carver. “There is a lot of talent in the U.S. team and they were very competitive. They closed us down and worked hard and that made it a good test for us. Some of our guys found it a bit tough because of energy levels. It’s not that important to win in preseason but it’s always good to get a victory,” he said.

Toronto opened the scoring in the 49th minute through Chad Barrett. The striker pounced on a poor clearance from the U.S. ‘keeper and finished well. Barrett played for 75 minutes and was delighted with his fitness. “The fact that I was able to go for 75 minutes in this heat was a big thing for me,” he said. “I want to make sure that I am fit for the new season and I have worked very hard over the winter to make sure I am over the cramping issues and ready to go.”

Four trialists played in the game, and Scottish midfielder Michael McGlinchey scored Toronto’s second goal with twenty minutes left to play when he headed in a cross from Sam Cronin. Former Norwich City and Southampton defender Darren Kenton played the whole game. Guyanese forward Gregory Richardson and Bolivian Pablo Salinas Manacho came on as substitutes.

The U.S. pulled a goal back with 13 minutes remaining but Toronto held on for a win. The Reds next game is on Tuesday against Chicago Fire.
