Toronto FC coach John Carver has been pleased with the performance of the players in the first week of preseason training. “We’ve got the results back from the fitness testing we did on the first day and everybody is within the targets that we set them,” said Carver.

The Reds went through a double training session at BMO Field on Thursday and now head to Bradenton, Florida on Friday. “They’ve all come back in great shape. Paul Winsper had given them an offseason program and it seems they have all been sticking to it because they are in good condition,” explained Carver. “They’ve obviously done the work and not just been laying about watching television.”

“On Tuesday we played seven against seven and eight against eight in a big area. On Wednesday we went down to three against three. All of our fitness work is done with the football and it was quite intense and hard work. We have had long days this week but we’ve had enough time off over the winter and now is the time to put the work in. Now is a very important time for everyone to get themselves fit.”

On Thursday some players from the TFC Academy Senior Team joined the training and Carver was impressed with the standard of their play. “I was really pleased with them,” he said. “They’re only 15 or 16 years old and they were training with senior players. They have gone in there and done really well. I’m going to get them involved in training more often because they are a big part of this football club.”
