Message to the Red Patch Boys: Take a breath.

Rabid Toronto FC fans who have developed a love affair with first-year coach John Carver have filled the Major League Soccer Internet message boards with angst over the past two days on rumours Carver is about to sign a deal taking him back to the English Premier League and Newcastle United.

One English newspaper even had Carver already signed on as second assistant to proposed Magpies coach Alan Shearer.

As much as Newcastle is a part of Carver’s very DNA, he is wise enough to know that going back to his former club as the No. 2 assistant is not something he would consider at this point in his coaching career.

About a month ago, when stories first were floated that Carver might be in line for head coaching duties at Newcastle, he told Sun Media that until the ownership/management mess the club finds itself in this season is solved, he wouldn’t consider a move back across the Atlantic Ocean.

It was shortly after that he signed an extension with TFC to the end of the 2009 season.

Yesterday, a source in TFC’s front office said that Carver has assured the team he’ll be back in Toronto come February when training camp opens.

Carver also told the Newcastle Chronicle that his focus this off-season is on building the Reds to respectability for next season.

“Every other management position I have been involved in has been thrust upon me,” Carver said. “But at Toronto there has been a chance to build things up, here I have been able to lay some foundations.”

Carver said that his appearance this past weekend at a Newcastle game was strictly to put in place some plans that would help TFC.

“I am back in Newcastle on business and hopefully getting some things in place that will improve Toronto next season,” he said,

“(I will) return in February to Toronto for pre-season training.”
