Earthquakes midfielder & former TFC target Darren Huckerby has been named the 2008 Major League Soccer newcomer of the year.

Huckerby joined the Earthquakes on July 14 when the team acquired his rights from Toronto FC. The former Norwich City star immediately made an impact, scoring in his first two home matches.

It had been hoped that former Norwich City teammate Carl Robinson and English coach John Carver might be able to sway the 32-year-old forward to sign for the Reds, but according to a story on ESPN Soccernet, Huckerby’s agent said he “liked the idea of California.”

Mo Johnston said Huckerby had concerns with the FieldTurf at BMO Field which is why he chose to play in San Jose instead of Toronto. “Obviously Darren had a slight problem with the turf, which we all knew because he had some injuries,” said Johnston. “He came in and loved everything else about the place.”
